About This Home

441 N Spring St

Welcome to McCafferty House. A charming Folk Victorian built in 1882 by Charles McCafferty as his personal residence. McCafferty was known in Bellefonte as the premier builder of many of the residences and commercial buildings, including many the homes on Linn and Curtin Streets. He built the grand stone jail behind the courthouse that served the county until it was destroyed by fire in 1959. His obituary listed the Brockerhoff and the Bellefonte Elks Lodge (Governor Andrew Curtin residence) as his building projects. Charles lived in this home from 1883 to 1887 with his second wife, Catherine B Williams. Their marriage announcement lists Catherine as the woman whose profile was used for making the “Liberty Dollar.” Located in Bellefonte’s Historic District. This nearly 5000 square feet, three story home was operated as a commercial property for over 30 years. The current owners purchased it in 2001 and converted the counseling center into a Bed and Breakfast for football games and family. The large inviting front porch was added back to the property in 2003 and welcomes you in. The main floor, with soaring ceilings and large windows, gives a spacious feel. From the entryway, large double doors lead into the formal living room with decorative fireplace mantle. A second set of double doors with stained glass transom lead into the versatile great room with access to the back yard. Another door with stained glass transom leads into the kitchen. The Kitchen has Amish made cupboards, a walk-in pantry, a built-in pass through and swinging doors into the Dining room. Another swing door and back-to-back fireplaces lead into the Parlor/Office. The fireplaces have slate hearths and remote-controlled gas inserts, installed by Pennwood. Back into the entryway to the main staircase with a half bath tucked underneath. Upstairs are the Four bedrooms with attached full baths. Many rooms have refinished hardwood. The second-floor laundry room has a back service staircase back down into the kitchen. The third floor is four separate rooms and small ½ bath used as bedrooms/storage for visiting family. The space is currently partially finished. Plumbing was installed for a future kitchenette and a tub. The oversized 2-car garage was added by the current owners and has a workspace and attic storage. The home’s exterior and much of the first-floor interior is freshly painted. Roof completed November 2023. Chimney repointed March 2024.
