Among the names connected to this ground is John Lindsay—a Silver Bow County district judge, attorney, mining-property participant, and an associate of Marcus Daly during Butte's extraordinary transformation. Lindsay arrived in Butte in 1889 as Daly's private secretary and legal counsel before eventually taking the bench. Lindsay understood mining. He understood mineral rights. He understood the value—and uncertainty—of Montana's mineral ground. And yet, among the many claims and properties that passed through the hands of men of his era, the Sparo remained one he held.
