Built in 1915 by Dr. Miller, Wellman's first doctor, this isn't just a home it is a piece of history. From the hand crafted details in the original wood work, to the mural paintings above the shoulder high ledge around the dining room walls, the home has as much charismatic history as it has craftsmanship. Enter the front door to the ornate hand crafted parlor with a majestic staircase to the second floor where the doctor saw his patients in the room at the top of the stairs. Or enter the paned lead glass French doors into the sitting room or den attached to the living room. The landscape windows with window bench and storage, sit across the wood burning fireplace next to a set of folding doors that lead into the dining room. The dining room has mural postcards of famous landmarks around the country that the doctor enjoyed, painted by a boarder who was having trouble painting his rent they are a true piece of history. The ledge was also used for chalk and slate boards as the dining room also served as a spill over classroomcfor the now preserved One Room School House next door! Upstairs there is a pocket door to separate the private house from the doctors working area. The hall leads to three bedrooms with all original wood work and wood floors. The full bathroom has door with stairs leading to a full floored attic that could easily be finished an additional significant square footage. The kitchen, laundry room and second bathroom are on the main floor located behind the dining rom and living room. There is also a rear staircase connecting the kitchen to the upstairs. The kitchen and bathrooms have been refinished but still fit the original charm of the home. There is a full stone basement with one room containing three desks concreted to the floor. You fill-in the story there.... my son said if that was detention he wouldn't want to go there. There is some accumulation of things in the basement from various owners throughout the years and one room was a some point a workshop with shelves. There is a large fenced back yard and the vacant to behind the driveway is where the carriage house was located. Does she need some TLC, she's 107 years old of course she does. But this is a treasure for some one who appreciates architectural and/or Iowa history.
