History As the California Gold Rush got underway in 1849, a Wisconsin mining company established a settlement in the middle of the area where gold had been discovered. The settlement was named Rough and Ready to pay homage to Pres. Zachary Taylor, who was nicknamed "Old Rough and Ready." The leader of the Wisconsin miners, Capt. A. A. Townsend, had fought with Taylor in the Mexican-American War. The community made news in 1850 when its citizens voted to secede from the United States. They were upset with a new tax on mining claims, and they did not approve of the prohibition of alcohol that was in effect in the county. They formed the "Great Republic of Rough and Ready," but they had a change of heart just three months later, as Independence Day approached.
