Kingston is a city in and the county seat of Ulster County, New York, United States. It is 91 miles (146 km) north of New York City and 59 miles (95 km) south of Albany. It became New York's first capital in 1777, and was burned by the British on October 13, 1777, after the Battles of Saratoga. In the 19th century, the city became an important transport hub after the discovery of natural cement in the region, and had both railroad and canal connections. Passenger rail service has since ceased, and many of the older buildings are part of three historic districts, such as the Stockade District uptown, the Midtown Neighborhood Broadway Corridor, and the Rondout-West Strand Historic District downtown. less

Kingston was the first Capital of New York State. For about a month - before Albany was declared the Capital! Kingston started out as an industrial town and has morphed over the years into a touristy and artsy town. There's a thriving arts community both Uptown and on the Rondout. There are three sections to this lovely City - Uptown Kingston - known for it's historic sections with three hundred year old buildings; the Central Broadway section with many businesses including the 1500 seat Ulster Performing Ats Center (UPAC), and the Rondout area located right at the intersection of the Hudson River and the Rondout Creek. For the past few years Kingston has really been on the upswing with many new chic and hip restaurants opening along with several art galleries in all sections of the City.
