San Juan County is one of the few counties in the United States that imposes a tax on real estate buyers to fund purchases of land to hold for conservation. This one time 1% fee, imposed on buyers of all real estate purchases in the County, has provided residents and visitors of the islands with large swaths of open space, including farmland, waterfront, historic preservation areas, and mountaintops. Access to most areas are open to the public, and include hiking trails throughout. In addition, the Land Bank areas provide protection to endangered species such as native wildflowers and grasses, butterflies, birds, and more! Touching on the fantastic community here in the San Juan's would be putting this event on Sat 12-9-17 lightly. What a great display of community for adults and children.
