Dannemora: More Than Just a Prison Town
Chances are even if you're not local to northern New York you've heard about that "little" prison break that happened in Dannemora NY in June of 2015. Thousands of law enforcement, border patrol, and corrections officers spent countless hours and days searching for Clinton Correctional Facility prison escapees David Sweat and Richard Matt in the Adirondack Mountains of NY, Green Mountains of VT, and surrounding areas. Because they were both convicted murderers, our local communities were on edge for 3 weeks. The search ended with the killing of Matt and recapture of Sweat.
Quite a compelling story, right? Our little slice of Adirondack heaven made national and even international news. Suddenly, everyone wanted to know where Dannemora was located. The escape and planning behind it made quite a story and Actor/Director Ben Stiller found himself looking at a screenplay about the escape and decided after some time to direct a miniseries, which was recently released on Showtime (and nominated for a Golden Globe Award). "Escape at Dannemora" tells the story in 7 parts, and not only spotlights their escape, but some of the scenes depicted in the movies show just how beautiful our region is. Ben Stiller himself seemed quite taken with the area as he shared several images on his Instagram feed while in the area filming.
Now famous for that prison escape, the village of Dannemora may not seem appealing to outsiders as a "great place to live", but we disagree. Although the focus of the area is the prison itself, the homes located in the village are quaint, well-kept and sell for very reasonable prices. Everyone knows each other and are always ready to lend a helping hand to their neighbor. The surrounding area is dotted with amazing scenery featuring mountains, lakes and forests - an outdoor enthusiast's paradise! Located within a few short miles, you'll find shopping, dining, and high quality healthcare. If moving to a famous small town is something that appeals to you, take a look at the current homes for sale in Dannemora and decide for yourself if this quaint village is for you!
