Ushering in a New Decade???
Is January 1, 2020 really the start of a new decade? Had you asked me this question a week ago, I would have resoundingly said “Well of course!”
You see New Years Day has always been extra special for me because I’m a New Year’s Baby…born at 2:02 a.m., the first ever at Westerly Hospital in Westerly RI. I deprived my parents of the 1964 tax deduction for a plus one setting the tone for a lifetime of firsts and adventures as they raised me. I even made the front page of the newspaper!
So I’ve given it away and now you all know that this New Years Day in 2020, I will be celebrating my Double Nickel Birthday (Yes 55) and as that number spills from my lips, even I don’t believe it. It really is true that age is a state of mind and I see that evidenced in our Coldwell Banker Sunstar Family of Agents.
I’m inspired every day by our agents who continue to set higher goals, give more to their communities and create amazing legacies in the world. People who instead of choosing to retire are just embarking on their real estate careers while others fresh out of high school and college also join our ranks.
I graduated from college in the 80s with my sights set on law school as I completed a double major in Political Science and Language. Then I took a year to live in Italy doing post-graduate work and traveling to 15 countries. Real estate was never even a thought in my mind yet somehow a mentor suggested to me that I was a “natural born salesperson” (whatever that is) and I fell backwards into the real estate business at the age of 27.
All I can say is that it has been the greatest adventure of my life and what makes it even better is that I get to share it with the love of my life David. He has supported me since the day I got my first salesperson license and every day since. He joined me in 1995 and never looked back. We’ve experienced the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat having been through some pretty crazy markets. But OH the unforgettable journey it has been and as the Ronnie Milsap song says “I Wouldn’t Have Missed It For The World”.
We joined the Schmidt Family of Companies by way of a Merger-Acquisition in February of 2018 knowing that we had come to a place where we wanted to give back and share our years of experience with anyone who cared to listen. We love our Englewood Beach Office and being a part of this visionary company whose core values of Collaboration, Loyalty, Initiative, Positive Outlook and Servant Leadership align so closely with our own personal life values.
So back to the answer to the question I first posed. Leave it to Valerie Guenther, long time Realtor with our Englewood Beach Office to set me straight! She walked into my office this past Monday saying “I’m tired of all these people talking about ushering in a new decade.” I didn’t utter a word as I had no idea where this was heading. She then proceeded to school me on the fact that we were in fact ending a decade, not ushering in a new one!
Well imagine this New Year’s Baby spending her whole life thinking she was the authority on the new year finding out she might have been wrong all these years!
So I set to work investigating and found that Valerie had a point as articulated here:
“No, insists Freitag, and the Farmer’s Almanac is on her side.
Since there was no year “0” at the very beginning of the calendar, it follows that the year “1″ would be the first year of the decade, century, or millennium.”
But then I went to my trusty Wikipedia to find this: The 2020s (pronounced "twenty-twenties", shortened to "the '20s") is the upcoming decade in the Gregorian calendar that will begin on 1 January 2020, and will end on 31 December 2029.
If you are looking for a fun topic to debate at your New Year’s Eve Party, I highly recommend this one as it seems to be a very controversial topic.
Whether you believe you are closing out the last decade or ushering in a new year , we wish you a Very Happy New Year and look forward to watching you all Leave Your Mark in our community and in the world in 2020 and beyond!
