    It’s finally “the best time of the year”—the holiday season! From Christmas carols and hot cocoa to icicle lights and inflatable snowmen, everyone has a special memory that helps them get into the magic of holidays. Luckily, whether you are visiting the Outer Banks or live here year-round, there are plenty of exciting events you can attend in December to ensure that everyone in your family will experience that magic! Here are some of our favorite traditions:

    One time-honored and well-loved event is the annual Candy Drop at the Dare County Regional Airport! Each year, retired US Airforce pilot Gail Halvorsen (nicknamed the “Candy Bomber” after dropping candy from his plane to German children during the Berlin Airlift in the late 1940s) flies over Dare County to carry on his tradition around 1PM!     Head to Manteo this Saturday, December 11th for the Christmas on the North End at Island Farm! Visitors will get to discover and experience how locals celebrated traditional Christmas in the mid-1800s.This interactive exhibit features live interpreters, a decorated homeplace, traditional foods, and holiday crafts like making ornaments and grapevine wreaths! You can even get your photo taken with Old’ St. Nick! This event costs $8 for anyone over 4 and is free for kids 3 or younger. Learn more here!

    Bring the whole family out to Hatteras Village on December 11th at 2PM to enjoy the annual Hatteras Village Christmas Parade! This parade features floats from local businesses, the fire department, the US Coast Guard and more! In classic parade style, kids should bring a goodie bag for all the candy and prizes, and of course—look out for Santa! Parade goers can also enjoy cookies and hot chocolate after the parade at the community building. Learn more here!

    Enjoy a holiday shopping extravaganza at the First Flight Holiday Market at Aviation Park! Dozens of local vendors will be on site offering everything from art and jewelry to beauty products and baked goods. Pick up a few last-minute Christmas gifts and enjoy something tasty from the food trucks! The next market date is Saturday, December 18th from 10AM to 2PM. Learn more here!

    If you love picking out the perfect Christmas gift, the Holiday Farmer’s Market at Dowdy Park was made for you! Come out to Nags Head’s Dowdy Park to browse through dozens of unique products crafted by local area vendors. From baked goods, fresh produce and locally sourced meat to jewelry, candles, pottery and other homemade gifts, there is sure to be something for everyone on your list! December 11th from 9AM to 12PM is the last chance to enjoy this festive market, so don’t miss it. Learn more here!

    What better way to get in the Christmas spirit than taking a festive stroll through a real-life winter wonderland!? A long-standing and well-loved tradition for both visitors and locals alike, the Winter Lights at The Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo serves as a spectacular display of holiday lights. From the entry to the trees along the path, the entire gardens are illuminated with tens-of-thousands of twinkling light displays. You will also enjoy Christmas music, outdoor holiday movies, and live entertainment on Fridays & Saturdays. This event costs $12 for adults, $10 for ages 6-17, $7 for ages 2-5, and Free to children under 2. Dogs are welcome for $3!     Celebrate America’s history in aviation on Wright Brothers Day at the Wright Brothers National Memorial on Friday, December 17th beginning at 8:30AM. This annual anniversary celebration will feature guest speakers like Superintendent of the National Parks of Eastern NC David Hallac, Historian Darrell Collins and more! Learn more about the Wright Brothers and their aviation legacy while celebrating the newest addition into the Paul E. Garber First Flight Shrine with this year’s inductee—Dr. Sally Ride. Visitors will also witness flyover tributes by NASA aircraft, the Ft. Bragg 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade & the Candy Bomber’s C-54 Spirt of Freedom. Learn more here!
