5 Fun Things to do in Amherst, MA
Amherst- the most populous in Hampshire County- is a vibrant, intellectual hub. Three prestigious colleges call Amherst home: Hampshire College, Amherst College, and UMass Amherst. Downtown is lively, youthful, and beautiful with lots of historical architecture to admire and many incredible shops and restaurants. With so much to see and do in this quintessential New England town, we put together a short list of some of our favorite Amherst spots.
1- Puffers Pond- The Pond is the largest open water body in Amherst and a prominent recreation area for fishing, birding, nature walking, canoeing, picnicking, and swimming. It’s very popular with both locals and college students for some good ol’ outdoor fun.
2- Groff Park- This adorable park has a little something for everyone. There’s a playground, a splash pad, 3 ball fields, and a few picnic areas. There’s also a walking trail, called the Emily Dickenson Trail, that is very well maintained and follows a shallow stream perfect for wadding.
3- Amherst Cinema- This local mainstay is a non-profit, independent theater. They mainly show first-run independent film and classic repertory that are usually not found at commercial cinemas. If you’re in the mood for something a little different, this theater is a lovely local gem.
4- Eric Carle Museum- This fun museum- that’s devoted to the art of picture books- is a great place to take the little ones. There are often story times, art activities, and of course, they have a gift shop where you can buy all the cute books to take home.
5- Mount Holyoke Range State Park- Love breathtaking views? Then you should definitely visit this 3,000-acre state park that features a 7-mile mountain ridge line. The park also includes streams, wetlands, woods, and thickets. Visitors can explore more than 30 miles of blazed hiking trails and take in some of the most amazing views in the valley.
