I've been living in Gatlinburg for the last 5 years and I have to say, this place has that "something special" for everyone. Perfect for family vacation as well as for quiet and peace for your soul. Downtown is full of restaurants and attraction and the mountains are just one step away. You can find amazing hiking trails, breathtaking views and if you are lucky sometimes you can see bears and wildlife all around. And when I say all around, I'm talking about wildlife in the mountains and in the backyard of your hotel. Don't be surprise if you will see bears in town though, Gatlinburg is famous for this, but don't forget to keep the distance! Sometimes visitors tends to forget about safety when it comes to a good photo of a bear in the middle of the town. As a resident of this small town I know how Gatlinburg can get very busy, so you might want to try a few backroads to avoid the traffic. From my experience, if you came to visit Gatlinburg, just take the closest parking lot and just walk around. Even when it comes to check in to your hotel or cabin. If is close to the main street, just leave your car on a parking lot and go to do your check in. You can come back later, when the traffic is normal. This is a easy way to spend more time enjoying your vacation. I will also mention here that Gatlinburg is a great place to start a small business. You can find a nice cabin good for rent all year round and then you can have your own place when you come in vacation. This is a great way to transform your vacation in a "staycation". Great place to retire from big city life. less
