The Fort, in Fort Pierce, was a post built during General Thomas Jessup's winter campaign against the fierce and savvy Seminole Indians. Numbering over 1,000 troops, this mounted force engaged in an unsuccessful campaign to force the Indians to relocate west of the Mississippi. The Fort was deactivated in 1842 and destroyed by fire in 1843 but remnants and artifacts including deer bone fish hooks, uniform buttons, and cookware and the like have been discovered here.
