Create a Cozy Bedroom for Better Sleep
November is National Sleep Comfort Month and we've got some tips to help you create a better sleeping environment to potentially get better sleep.
The National Sleep Foundation encourages everyone to get the sleep they need. NSF recommends 7-9 hours of sleep for adults aged 18-64 and 7-8 hours for older adults aged 65 and over.
Of course, each person is unique and may have different needs depending on health, lifestyle, preference, etc.
One way to help improve the quality of your sleep is to try and implement a sleep schedule. Life is unpredictable, so this may seem like an impossible task, but even small adjustments can help.
Going to bed early during the week and then staying up all night on the weekends can keep you in a cycle of trying to play 'catch up' on sleep, which may cause you to feel tired.
To help jumpstart your routine, you might want to practice a relaxing bedtime ritual. Experts say that the blue light from screens like tablets and mobile devices can delay the release of sleep-inducing melatonin, increase alertness, and reset the body's internal clock (or circadian rhythm) to a later schedule.
So you might want to choose a time to turn off screens at night.
Evaluate your sleeping space. Is your mattress comfortable and suitable for your sleeping needs? Do you need to toss your old pillows and replace with new ones? How about the type of sheets you use?
Temperature is key to a good night's sleep as well. Nobody likes to be too hot or too cold so your own comfort is key with creating a good sleeping environment.
Other factors like overall health, daily exercise and things like alcohol and caffeine can impact your sleep.
No matter what your unique situation might be, November is a great time to assess your sleep situation and begin making adjustments if needed.
And if your current bedroom is not what you're dreaming of, maybe it's time to think about making a move. Fall is the new spring, as far as the market is concerned. This is a perfect time to sell your home for the most value!
