Home Security Tips for New Homeowners
Buying a new home is an exciting process and one of the best parts of what we do as real estate agents. It's such an honor to be part of our clients' journey toward home.
June is National Safety Month and we've got some tips for you to help make security a priority as a new homeowner.
Get to Know Your Neighborhood
One way to make safety a priority is by getting to know your neighborhood. There's likely already a group you can join (check platforms such as NextDoor or Facebook) or if there isn't, consider starting one!
This will help you feel more familiar with where things are, how to access any amenities and alternate routes in case of road closures or detours. Once you know the ins and outs of your neighborhood and what you can expect, you'll feel much more informed about the area.
Get to Know Your Neighbors
Once you've gotten familiar with the neighborhood itself, the next step is to connect with your neighbors. Perhaps there's a neighborhood event where everyone will be gathered or you might be able to connect through the online group or network. You can always just get to know them the old fashioned way, by going to their door and introducing yourself.
Or if you're really lucky, your neighbors might come over and introduce themselves to you by bringing some sort of sweet treat or baked good...delicious!
Get to Know Your home
The final step for making sure your home is safe and secure is to assess the situation around the house. Check points of entry (doors & windows) for anything that might need to be repaired, updated or upgraded. You might want to change the locks or add additional locks if needed.
Our home warranty partner 2-10 Home Buyers Warranty offers a program called Happy Home Lock & Hardware, which reimburses buyers up to $100 for installing new door locks, making key copies and/or rekeying your home.
Thinking about adding some smart home devices? There are lots of different products on the market that allow you keep your home more secure, conveniently from your smartphone. Home security systems are another option you might consider.
Ultimately, you want to be able to enjoy life at home and feel safe and secure as long as you live there. We hope these tips inspire you to do just that!
