Unique cost-cutting home design ideas

Unique cost-cutting home design ideas

July 28, 2011

While many homeowners may think it's impossible to alter their homes with remodeling projects and new designs for little expense, Inman News reports there are a number of ways they can make affordable upgrades and additions to their homes that can not only save them money, but also add some value to their home.

Prior to shopping for new home design items, Realtor Magazine recommends homeowners keep in mind traits they want before making renovations to their home, including safety and comfort.

Install large pantries

According to Inman News, homeowners can save a considerable amount of space in their kitchens by adding large pantries. Drywall pantries are more cost-effective than cabinetry pantries, Inman News reports. Additionally, wire shelving can allow for more space in the pantries than thicker cabinet-style shelving.

Alter the master bathroom

While adding or renovating a master bathroom for minimal expenses can seem like an impossible task for homeowners, Inman News reports remodeling this room for a low cost is possible.

Homeowners can save substantial amounts of space by installing a tub-shower combo, Inman News reports, and the extra space could be used for a variety of things, such as a linen closet or storage.

Add straight-run stairs

Homeowners who plan on replacing their aging or deteriorating staircase with a more modern set may want to consider installing straight-run stairs instead of a winding staircase. According to Inman News, straight-run stairs often cost markedly less than other styles because fewer materials are used to make them. Also, by installing this type of staircase, homeowners could find themselves with a more open home and additional spacing for decorating.

Consider foundation alternatives

According to Inman News, homeowners looking for extra space in their homes can find some often overlooked areas for an answer. One way to create extra storage space is by adding shelves near the roof of a garage and in an attic roof truss. Utilizing this space can allow homeowners to clear away any large clutter they have.

Window placement could add value

Though it may not actually improve the value of one's home, Inman News reports adding windows to the front - or street-facing area - of one's home could add a perceived value which could end up yielding high-priced offers should homeowners ever decide to sell.
