Tips to save space in the kitchen
August 29, 2011
Improvements to a home can add value and therefore could increase the likelihood
a home buyer will be interested in placing an offer on a property.
Kitchens are frequently the center of life in many homes, since mealtimes are often family time as well. As a result, saving space in the kitchen can have a major impact, making a home more livable and attractive to home buyers.
Space is a particular issue, especially for families who congregate in the kitchen or entertain guests. Opening up space for people to socialize and cook in the kitchen can significantly impact how attractive a home is, but its frequent of the room use could make major remodeling projects difficult.
Saving space with furniture and organizers
According to HouseLogic, one method that doesn't require professional builders is
to use shelves and wire bins, obtainable at a home improvement center, to convert
a nearby closet into pantry or cupboard space. This creates someplace to store
dishes, utensils or non-perishable foods that might otherwise be left out.
Another option is to take the microwave and place it inside a drawer, which
should open up the kitchen counter. Martha Stewart recommends using bathroom
towel racks, placed on the back of the pantry door, as a place to store the lids
from pots and pans.
Wall space above cabinets and under windows is often forgotten, but can be filled
with shelving or brackets that create additional storage space. For those
remodeling a kitchen, consider getting cutting boards that slide into the
cabinets and out of the way.
Saving space on cups, dishes and cooking tools
HouseLogic notes that the space over a sink is also frequently ignored, but empty
wall can be used to store cooking utensils by hanging a simple rack with hooks.
This can keep dishes and tools accessible while freeing up space in drawers and
cupboards.
One option, according to Martha Stewart, is to place cutting boards, baking
sheets and similar items upright on their side in cupboard and cabinets, using
tension curtain rods or similar items to hold them up safely. This can make them
more easily accessible than stacking, and keep them out of view when not being
used.
